Salvage operations

Here at McDermott Aviation, we relish in being asked to carry out challenging operations, in particular Salvage Operations. For any incident that may arise, we can offer cost effective solutions to reduce environmental impact and timely alternatives to any situation that might need rectifying.

Our Bell 214 helicopter, together with the size and reliability provides the best solution for any Salvage Operation. As well as having external carrying capacity of up to 3000kg, to transport heavy and awkward Salvage Equipment including generators, anchors, & pumping apparatus, it has internal carrying capacity of up to 2000kg for the smaller items including cargo nets, remote hooks, and long lines. Coupled with our expertise & experience in precision long lining, we have the ‘know how’ for areas classed as environmentally sensitive, remote, or inaccessible.

Apart from transporting salvage equipment, another element of the salvage operation is also transferring the necessary crew to and from the Salvage site, whether it’s out in the ocean, outback Australia or on top of a mountain. With the safety of a ‘twin-engine’ and fuel endurance of up to 3.5 hrs, our reliable AS355-F1 – Twin Squirrel’ is the perfect solution to carry out such a task.

We can also offer Medivac and Winching Operations as part of the Salvage Operation.

In recent times, McDermott Aviation have been contracted to assists in salvage operations including the ‘Sheng Neng One’ off the Great Barrier Reef and the ‘Pasha Bulka’ in New South Wales, both involving carrying the required salvage equipment and transporting crew to and from the bulk carriers. Also the salvage operation of a R44 that crashed on top of Mt Barney required McDermott Aviation to remove (via long line) the unserviceable R44 off the top of Mt Barney to the designated recovery site.

At McDermott Aviation, safety is our Number 1 priority, so all of our aircraft are tracked via “real time” satellite tracking and is monitored from our office, and all management staff remotely.

Prior to ALL operations, risk assessments are carried out to ensure safety of our crew, our client, and our cargo. Any ‘High Risk’ activities are covered by a site specific Job Safety and Environmental Analysis (JSEA) and Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS).
